The First Generation
Farmer Problem
Half of America's farmers are set to retire by 2035. There's no plan to replace them.
Most heirs simply want to cash out. Without a change, corporations, billionaires, and foreign interests will keep buying up that land — eroding our farms, our food supply, our farmworkers, and our natural environment.
We need a wave of new, first-generation farmers. The small-farming movement was supposed to be that wave. It hasn't been. Brutal labor demands and a broken business model means nearly all new farmers quit within a decade — let alone building something that lasts generations.
Blackbird exists to solve this. We believe food production and distribution should be under community control — not trapped in an adversarial relationship between family farmers and shareholder agribusiness that leaves corporations rich, farmers cash-starved, and 2.3 billion people food insecure.
We're still small. Just four optimistic guys who've thrown everything we have into proving this can work. We will win, or ruin ourselves trying.
